Minefield: free to play in your browser
Minefield is the classic mine-finding logic puzzle. Mines are hidden under some of the squares. Open a safe square and it shows a number: how many mines touch it, including diagonally. Use the numbers to work out where every mine is, and open everything else.
Your first tap is always safe and opens up a patch of the board. On a phone, tap to open and hold to plant a flag, or switch on Flag Mode. Controllers and keyboards work too.
How to play
- Choose Easy (9 × 9, 10 mines), Medium (10 × 14, 24 mines) or Hard (12 × 20, 45 mines).
- Tap or click a square to open it. The timer starts on your first tap, which is always safe.
- Each number shows how many of the eight squares around it hold a mine. Blank squares open their neighbours automatically.
- Mark a mine with a flag: hold your finger on it, right-click it, press X or E on the keyboard, or B on a controller. You can also switch on Flag Mode so every tap places a flag.
- Tap a number when all of its mines are flagged to open every other square around it at once.
- Open every safe square to win. Opening a mine ends the game.
Game modes
- Easy · 9 × 9
- 10 mines on 81 squares. A quick game and the one your best time on the site is based on.
- Medium · 10 × 14
- 24 mines. Upright on a phone the board is tall; sideways it turns on its side to fit the screen.
- Hard · 12 × 20
- 45 mines on 240 squares, for a proper puzzle. Your best time for each size is saved on your device.
Tips
- Start with the 1s. A 1 touching only one closed square means that square is a mine.
- If a number already has all its mines flagged, every other square around it is safe. Tap the number to open them all.
- Look for the 1-2-1 pattern along an edge: the mines are under the two 1s, not the 2.
- Sometimes there's no safe move left. Guess in the corner or edge square with the fewest unknowns around it.
Questions
How do I flag a mine on a phone?
Hold your finger on the square until the yellow ring fills, or switch on Flag Mode at the bottom of the screen so taps place flags.
Can I hit a mine on my first tap?
No. The mines are placed after your first tap, never on or next to it.
Does it work with a controller?
Yes. Move with the stick or d-pad, press A to open and B (or X) to flag.
Can I play offline?
Yes. Press Save for offline on the game page while you're online, and Minefield will keep working on that device without internet.
